Sri Lanka Braces for Nationwide Rain with Increased Rainfall Forecast

The Department of Meteorology, headed by Director General Athula Karunanayake, has announced that Sri Lanka is likely to experience intensified rainfall starting Monday, December 9. This weather pattern is expected to persist until December 13, impacting several regions across the country.

The increased rainfall is attributed to a developing weather disturbance in the southern Andaman Sea, near the southwestern Bay of Bengal. The system is projected to intensify as it moves northward and slightly northwestward over the Bay of Bengal region. While this disturbance is expected to travel farther from Sri Lanka’s eastern coast than previous systems, its outer effects may still influence the island's weather.

The regions most likely to be affected by increased rainfall include the Northern, Eastern, North Central, and Uva provinces. The Department of Meteorology has assured the public that it will provide regular updates on the system’s trajectory through forthcoming advisories.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period of heightened rainfall.
