Colombo – The U.S. Embassy in Colombo announced on Wednesday that it has lifted travel restrictions previously imposed on the popular tourist destination of Arugam Bay, a move expected to reassure travelers and boost tourism in the area. This update follows an earlier advisory issued on October 23, which restricted American nationals from visiting the area due to intelligence reports suggesting a possible threat to Israeli tourists.
The travel restrictions were initially put in place as a precautionary measure after U.S. intelligence indicated that an attack targeting Israeli visitors was being planned. In response, Sri Lankan authorities took swift action, deploying additional security forces in Arugam Bay and surrounding regions, and arresting six suspects as part of a broader security operation. The Ministry of Defence also implemented a comprehensive security framework, helping restore safety and stability to the area.
With the security situation now assessed as stable, the embassy announced it would update its official travel advisory for Sri Lanka, removing Arugam Bay from the list of restricted areas for American travelers. U.S. Ambassador Julie Chung emphasized that the initial restrictions were intended to safeguard both American and Israeli tourists, stating, “Our priority is the safety and well-being of all visitors and residents in Sri Lanka.”
The Sri Lankan government welcomed the decision, with officials expressing confidence in the measures taken to secure Arugam Bay and other tourist hotspots. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the country’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful environment, particularly as the peak tourist season approaches.
The U.S. Embassy has advised American travelers to remain vigilant, review the updated travel advisory, and report any suspicious activities to local authorities by dialing 119. The removal of restrictions on Arugam Bay, known for its surfing and vibrant coastal scene, is expected to attract tourists back to the area, providing a boost to the local economy.
The update brings a sense of relief to local businesses and tourism operators who had voiced concerns over the impact of the restrictions on the area’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. As tourism remains a vital sector for Sri Lanka, this announcement is seen as a positive step toward restoring confidence among international visitors.
