Colombo, Sri Lanka – Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa has assured the public that the concessions provided on electricity tariffs will not be affected by the bonus payments made to employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
Speaking at a press briefing, the Minister clarified that the CEB will submit proposals to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) by December 6, which could include a potential reduction in electricity tariffs. He emphasized that the tariff revision process will be conducted independently of employee bonuses or trade union concerns.
"The administration of the Ceylon Electricity Board operates independently from its trade unions, and there is no overlap in decision-making," Minister Jayatissa stated, dismissing speculation about undue influence on administrative policies.
The announcement offers a glimmer of hope for electricity consumers, as the Minister hinted at the possibility of reduced tariffs. However, the final decision will depend on the PUCSL's evaluation of the proposals submitted by the CEB.
This statement comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the energy sector, as the government seeks to balance consumer relief with financial sustainability for the CEB.
