Six international flights scheduled to land at Katunayake International Airport were diverted this evening due to heavy rains causing unfavorable weather conditions in the area.
The Department of Civil Aviation confirmed that three flights—arriving from Chennai (India), Male (Maldives), and Abu Dhabi (UAE)—were redirected to Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport. Meanwhile, three additional flights arriving from Narita (Japan), Dubai (UAE), and another from Chennai were rerouted to Trivandrum International Airport in India.
Airport authorities cited poor visibility and safety concerns as the main reasons for the diversions. Passengers on these flights are being provided with assistance by the respective airlines, and efforts are underway to accommodate them at the alternate airports.
The adverse weather, attributed to ongoing heavy rainfall across the region, has disrupted several transportation services. Officials advise travelers to check for updates from airlines before heading to the airport.
Further updates on rescheduled flights and weather conditions will be provided as the situation evolves.
