Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for several areas along the Kelani River basin, cautioning residents to remain vigilant over the next 48 hours due to significant rainfall in the river's catchment areas.
According to officials, the risk of flooding extends to the Seethawaka, Dompe, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Colombo, and Wattala Divisional Secretariat Divisions. The heavy rainfall in recent hours has raised water levels in the Kelani River, increasing the potential for flooding in low-lying areas.
The department has urged residents in these areas to take precautionary measures and remain alert for updates. Those living near the riverbanks and flood-prone zones have been advised to secure their belongings, prepare for possible evacuations, and avoid crossing flooded roads or areas with strong currents.
Authorities, including the Disaster Management Center, are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with local officials to address any emergencies. Emergency response teams are on standby to assist affected communities if flooding occurs.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official announcements and report any emergencies to local authorities. The Irrigation Department has also requested the public to refrain from unnecessary travel to affected areas to ensure safety.
This alert comes as Sri Lanka continues to experience unpredictable weather patterns, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in flood-prone regions.
