Anura Kumara Dissanayake Presents Policy Proposals for 10th Parliament

On the occasion of the inaugural session of the 10th Parliament of Sri Lanka, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake unveiled an ambitious and transformative policy agenda designed to propel the nation toward economic stability, equitable growth, and good governance. His address highlighted several key priorities, each underpinned by transparency, accountability, and national unity.

Economic Reforms and Fiscal Management

The government plans to introduce the Interim Standard Account Bill by December, a measure aimed at enhancing transparency in financial operations. This effort will be complemented by the Budget 2025, slated for February, which seeks to drive targeted economic growth through inclusive policy measures. These reforms are designed to align with global best practices while addressing the immediate economic challenges faced by Sri Lanka.

Strengthening Social Welfare

President Dissanayake reaffirmed the government's commitment to social equity by announcing increased allowances under the Aswesuma Social Benefit Programme, a vital support mechanism for vulnerable populations. Additionally, the government will raise public sector salaries to boost morale and productivity among its workforce. A new allowance for school supplies demonstrates the administration’s dedication to enhancing educational opportunities for children.

Boosting the IT Sector

In a bid to position Sri Lanka as a global technology hub, the administration has set an ambitious target of expanding the IT workforce to 200,000 individuals and increasing IT-related exports to $5 billion annually. This initiative underscores the government's vision for modernizing the economy and creating high-value employment opportunities.

Partnership with the IMF

The administration is on track to sign the third staff-level agreement under the IMF's External Fund Facility (EFF) by November 23. This agreement will provide critical financial support, reinforcing the government’s efforts to implement sustainable economic reforms.

Promoting Unity and Social Cohesion

A strong stance against racial and religious extremism was reiterated during the address. The government aims to foster national harmony by rejecting divisive ideologies and promoting inclusive development initiatives.

Ensuring Economic Fairness

The government plans to abolish market monopolies, fostering fair competition and ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are equitably distributed among all citizens. This measure is designed to create an environment where every Sri Lankan has access to opportunities.

Advancing Public Sector Efficiency

To enhance service delivery, the government is prioritizing public sector reforms that reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies and place citizen welfare at the forefront. A streamlined and citizen-focused public administration is central to the administration’s governance ethos.

Upholding the Rule of Law

The President issued a call for universal adherence to the rule of law, emphasizing accountability for all, including politicians and public officials. An anti-corruption drive has been launched, with the administration committed to delivering justice and ensuring transparency in governance.

Clean Sri Lanka Programme

Environmental sustainability is a priority for the government. The Clean Sri Lanka programme, led by a dedicated task force, will address public hygiene and promote eco-friendly practices to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.

A Unified Vision for Progress

President Dissanayake’s policy statement outlines a bold and inclusive path forward, rooted in economic reform, social welfare, and robust governance. With clear priorities and actionable plans, this vision offers a beacon of hope for a prosperous, just, and united Sri Lanka.
