At a press conference held at Pivithuru Hela Urumaya headquarters, party leader and MP Udaya Gammanpila unveiled critical findings regarding the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. He revealed that a foreign intelligence unit had issued a warning about an impending suicide bombing, which was communicated to then Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ravi Senaviratne, via a confidential letter.
Gammanpila alleged that Senaviratne failed to act on the intelligence for 12 days, leading to the tragic bombings.
"If Ravi Senaviratne had acted on the intelligence immediately, all the bombers could have been arrested before they carried out the attacks," Gammanpila stated, calling for criminal accountability against the former DIG.
Additional Allegations
Gammanpila also pointed to the role of former CID Director Shani Abeysekera, citing a report that recommends filing criminal charges against him for not adequately performing his duties during the investigation into the attacks.
Furthermore, the investigation report implicates seven other government officials for negligence in preventing the bombings and recommends criminal proceedings against them.
Calls for Accountability
These revelations come amid increasing public demands for justice and transparency regarding the failures that enabled the attacks, which claimed over 260 lives. Gammanpila's disclosures are expected to intensify calls for legal action and further investigations into the lapses by law enforcement and government officials.
