The Sri Lankan police have arrested nine individuals in connection with election law violations as the campaign for the upcoming general election gathers momentum. Police headquarters have confirmed receiving eight complaints so far, prompting immediate action to uphold a fair electoral process.
However, the Election Commissioner’s Office reports a much higher number of complaints. Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake revealed that 290 complaints of election law violations have been filed, all of which are currently under investigation.
Enforcement of Election Laws
Commissioner Ratnayake emphasized the importance of strict adherence to election laws and has directed law enforcement, including the police, to act decisively against violations. He warned that disciplinary measures would be taken against officials who fail to enforce these regulations effectively.
Guidelines for Campaign Conduct
To maintain transparency and legality in campaign activities, the Election Commission has issued detailed instructions to political parties and independent groups regarding the proper establishment of election offices. These guidelines aim to ensure lawful conduct during the campaign period and to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
Political parties have been urged to strictly follow these directives to prevent any disruptions to the fairness of the election.
High Alert for a Transparent Election
Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert as the election date approaches, prioritizing a peaceful and law-abiding environment for voters. The public is encouraged to report any observed violations to support the effort to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
This election season is viewed as a critical test of Sri Lanka’s commitment to democratic principles and a fair electoral process.
