Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a two-day visit to Kazan, Russia, to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit, which brings together the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This year's summit, hosted by Russia, holds significant global importance as it takes place amid ongoing tensions in Ukraine. The summit is seen as a platform for non-Western powers to assert their influence in the global arena.

In addition to the core BRICS members, the grouping has expanded to include new members such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE, signaling its growing clout in international affairs. Russian President Vladimir Putin has used this occasion to highlight Russia's defiance against Western isolation, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine. The summit serves as a strategic counterbalance to Western-dominated global structures.

During the summit, key issues on the agenda include President Putin’s proposal for a BRICS-led payment system to rival the Western SWIFT network, which Russian banks were excluded from in 2022. Another major topic of discussion is the escalating conflict in West Asia, which has drawn international concern.

PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with various world leaders, including President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The discussions are expected to focus on deepening economic and diplomatic ties, along with addressing the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

At the bilateral meeting with President Putin, PM Modi reiterated India's commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, stating that all efforts should prioritize humanity and stability. Modi expressed India's readiness to cooperate in global peace-building efforts. He also acknowledged the historic ties between India and Kazan, underscoring the significance of the newly opened Indian consulate in the city.

The BRICS summit marks a pivotal moment for global geopolitics, as leaders from the Global South gather to discuss strategies for advancing their collective interests and counterbalancing Western dominance in global governance.
