The Commissioner General of Examinations, Amit Jayasundara, announced today (14th) that there is no need to re-conduct the controversial Grade 5 scholarship examination. In response to the controversy, it has been decided to award free marks for the three disputed questions, thereby addressing concerns raised by students and parents.
The Ministry of Education recently appointed a seven-member committee to assess whether the exam should be re-held, following public outcry regarding the examination process. This committee was formed on the advice of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The controversy surrounding this year’s Grade 5 scholarship exam began with the alleged leakage of certain exam questions, which prompted both the Department of Examinations and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to initiate investigations into the matter.
In a related development, the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court has remanded the director and a school teacher from the Maharagama National Institute of Education, who have been accused of leaking the exam questions prior to the examination. They will remain in custody until the 22nd of this month, as the investigation continues.
This decision to grant free marks for the controversial questions aims to mitigate the effects of the issue, ensuring that students are not unfairly impacted by the exam irregularities.
