The Commissioner General of Examinations, Amit Jayasundara, announced today (14th) that the controversial Grade 5 scholarship examination will not be re-conducted. Instead, free marks will be awarded for the three disputed questions to address concerns raised by students and parents.
Examination Irregularities and Investigations
The controversy arose following allegations of a question paper leak, leading the Department of Examinations and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to initiate investigations. In a related legal development, the Kaduwela Magistrate's Court remanded the director and a school teacher from the Maharagama National Institute of Education. They are accused of leaking the exam questions and will remain in custody until the 22nd of this month as investigations continue.
Ministry of Education's Actions
In response to public outcry, the Ministry of Education appointed a seven-member committee, acting on advice from Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, to evaluate whether the exam should be re-conducted. The committee's findings contributed to the decision to grant free marks instead of holding a re-examination.
Ensuring Fair Outcomes for Students
The decision to allocate free marks for the disputed questions seeks to ensure fairness, allowing students to avoid undue disadvantage caused by the examination irregularities. This resolution reflects a commitment to protecting the integrity of the examination process while addressing the concerns of students and their families.
