K.D. Lalkantha Questions Debt-Free Governance Claims, Defends Borrowing Practices

K.D. Lalkantha, executive member of the National People’s Force (NPP) and a Kandy district candidate, has challenged claims that the NPP will govern without borrowing after coming to power. Speaking at a media briefing at the Kandy Youth Buddhist Association Hall, he called for evidence to substantiate such statements, including those made by the President or Members of Parliament.

Borrowing and Loan Management

Lalkantha clarified that borrowing is not inherently problematic but emphasized the importance of managing loans responsibly. "We need credit, but it must be used correctly, not wasted on theft, fraud, or corruption," he stated.

He argued that the misuse of loans, not the act of borrowing itself, should be the focus of criticism. Lalkantha urged critics to assess whether loans are being effectively utilized, rather than making borrowing a point of contention.

Diplomatic Approach with the IMF

Addressing concerns about the International Monetary Fund (IMF) potentially withdrawing support, Lalkantha dismissed speculations that the IMF would reject an NPP-led government. He stressed the importance of diplomacy in maintaining relationships with financial institutions and reiterated the need to monitor the efficient use of borrowed funds.

Merit-Based Public Service Appointments

Lalkantha also addressed public service appointments, advocating for the selection of capable and qualified individuals irrespective of their past affiliations. "It doesn’t matter whether an official worked under Ranil or Mahinda—what matters is if they are performing their duties effectively for the people," he remarked.

He called on critics to evaluate the performance of appointed officials based on their competence and contributions, underscoring the NPP’s focus on meritocracy as a cornerstone of governance.
