An investigation has been initiated into the controversial rental agreement of a building used to house the Ministry of Agriculture during a previous administration. The Secretary of the Ministry revealed that a staggering deposit of 660 million rupees (66 crore) was paid to secure the building, located in the Rajagiriya area, for government use. However, years after the Ministry vacated the premises, the deposit amount has yet to be returned.
The building in question is owned by the husband of renowned actress Sabitha Perera, bringing the high-profile case into the public spotlight.
The Ministry of Agriculture has sought legal counsel from the Attorney General's office on how to proceed with reclaiming the deposit. According to MP Wickramasinghe, who is closely following the matter, the Attorney General's office has been asked for advice on the necessary actions to recover the deposit and hold accountable those involved in the rental arrangement.
The investigation highlights concerns over financial mismanagement during the previous government’s tenure and raises questions about the transparency of rental agreements for public institutions. The public awaits further updates as legal procedures are expected to unfold soon.
