The government has officially rejected the investigative report on the Easter Sunday bomb attacks, which was released by former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila on October 21. This announcement was made by Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Vijitha Herath, during a press briefing held in Colombo today (22).
Minister Herath emphasized that the government does not recognize or accept the findings of the report presented by Mr. Gammanpila. He stated that, although the report had been publicized, the current administration has reservations regarding its contents and the process through which it was prepared.
In response to the ongoing concerns surrounding the tragic Easter Sunday attacks, the Minister also revealed that the government is planning to launch a new, comprehensive investigation into the incident. This decision reflects the administration’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind the attacks and ensuring accountability for those responsible.
“The government is committed to providing a thorough investigation that is independent, transparent, and conclusive. We owe it to the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks to ensure justice is served,” Minister Herath stated.
The previous investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks has been a matter of contention, with different reports and claims being made over the years. This announcement of a fresh inquiry indicates the government's intention to resolve any lingering doubts and bring clarity to one of Sri Lanka's most tragic events in recent history.
The Easter Sunday bomb attacks, which took place on April 21, 2019, resulted in the deaths of over 250 people and left hundreds more injured. The attacks targeted churches and luxury hotels across the country, leaving the nation in shock and raising critical questions about national security and intelligence failures.
With this new investigation, the government aims to address these questions and ensure that similar tragedies are prevented in the future.
