Government Announces New Investigation into Easter Sunday Incident Following Report Review

The government of Sri Lanka has officially rejected the investigative report on the Easter Sunday bomb attacks, released by former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila on October 21. Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath announced the decision during a press briefing held in Colombo today (22).

Minister Herath clarified that the government neither recognizes nor accepts the findings of Mr. Gammanpila’s report. He expressed concerns about the content and the methodology employed in preparing the document, suggesting that these issues prevent the report from being considered credible or reliable.

Plans for a Comprehensive Investigation

In light of the ongoing concerns about the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, Minister Herath revealed that the government plans to initiate a new, independent investigation into the incident. This inquiry aims to be thorough, transparent, and conclusive, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to justice and accountability.

“The government is committed to providing a thorough investigation that is independent, transparent, and conclusive. We owe it to the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks to ensure justice is served,” stated Minister Herath.

Background of the Easter Sunday Attacks

The Easter Sunday bombings, which occurred on April 21, 2019, tragically claimed the lives of over 250 people and injured hundreds more. The coordinated attacks targeted churches and luxury hotels, leaving the nation in shock and exposing critical gaps in national security and intelligence.

Over the years, various investigations and reports have been released, often leading to controversy and differing interpretations. By announcing a fresh investigation, the government seeks to eliminate lingering doubts, provide clarity, and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
