Former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, demanding the public release of unpublished reports related to the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka. Speaking to the media in Colombo today, Gammanpila emphasized that the President has until 10 a.m. tomorrow to disclose the reports.
Gammanpila asserted that the delay in releasing these critical reports, which remain hidden from the public, is a violation of the President's constitutional responsibility. He warned that if the reports are not made available by the given deadline, the President could face impeachment proceedings.
"The time I had given the President to make public the two crucial reports on the Easter Sunday attacks expires at 10 a.m. tomorrow. It is now his constitutional duty to release these reports and provide the transparency owed to the people of Sri Lanka," Gammanpila stated.
The reports in question have been the subject of controversy since the tragic attacks on Easter Sunday in 2019, which claimed the lives of over 260 people and injured hundreds more. Gammanpila, alongside several other political figures, has called for transparency regarding the investigation into the attacks, claiming that key findings from the investigations have been kept secret.
"Article 38 of the Constitution clearly outlines the responsibilities of the President. By failing to make these reports public, the President risks violating this article. The public has a right to know the details surrounding one of the most horrific incidents in Sri Lanka’s recent history, and the government must be held accountable for its actions," Gammanpila added.
The former MP further announced that if President Dissanayake fails to release the reports by the deadline, he would personally present the findings to the public. "If the President chooses to continue withholding these reports, I will ensure that the people of Sri Lanka have access to the truth," he affirmed.
The ultimatum comes amid growing pressure from various factions within Sri Lanka to address unresolved questions surrounding the Easter Sunday bombings. Many have criticized the government for its lack of transparency, with several political and religious leaders calling for the publication of the full investigative findings.
As the deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether President Dissanayake will respond to Gammanpila’s demands or if this issue will escalate further, possibly leading to an impeachment attempt. The public and political circles alike are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this high-stakes ultimatum, which could have significant implications for the current administration.
The Easter Sunday attacks have left a lasting scar on Sri Lanka, and calls for justice and full disclosure of the investigative findings continue to resonate throughout the nation. Gammanpila's latest move adds to the ongoing pressure on the government to provide answers and ensure accountability for the tragic events of 2019.
The next 24 hours are critical, and the nation watches closely as this political showdown unfolds.
