The media unit of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has contested a statement by the Government Information Department regarding the allocation of official vehicles for his security. The department had reported a higher number of vehicles in use, but Rajapaksa’s media unit clarified that only six official vehicles were allocated based on intelligence assessments.
Scheduled Vehicle Returns
According to the media unit, three of the six vehicles, including an ambulance, are scheduled for return to the Presidential Secretariat on October 21, 2024, following directives from the Secretariat.
Security Justifications
The media unit highlighted that intelligence assessments classify Mahinda Rajapaksa as the most threatened politician among Sri Lankan leaders. They emphasized that the vehicles in question were deployed strictly for security purposes, reflecting the high level of risk identified in these assessments.
Call for Accurate Reporting
Rajapaksa’s media unit has urged the Government Information Department to correct the inaccuracies in their earlier statement to ensure the public receives factual information about the matter.
