EU Ambassador and ADB Director Hold Discussions with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya


Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya welcomed Carmen Moreno, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Sri Lanka, in a meeting aimed at deepening ties and fostering economic collaboration. The discussion emphasized the importance of the Generalised Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+), which has significantly boosted Sri Lankan exports to Europe.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed gratitude for the EU’s support and stressed the need to strengthen the GSP+ agreement, highlighting its critical role in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery. She also outlined her government’s vision for economic reform, focusing on eliminating corruption, bolstering institutions like the Board of Investment (BoI), and enhancing transparency to attract foreign investment.


ADB Director Discusses Development Initiatives

In a separate meeting, Prime Minister Amarasuriya met Takafumi Kadono, the Sri Lanka Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), to discuss ongoing and future development projects. The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the ADB’s contributions to infrastructure, education, and social development, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration in areas such as poverty reduction and sustainable infrastructure.

Senior officials, including Cholpon Mambetova, Head of Sri Lanka Operations for the ADB, and Herathbanda Jayasundara, Senior Social Development Officer, participated in the discussions. The Prime Minister’s Secretary, Pradeep Saputantri, and ADB Division Director, Udeni Udugahapattua, were also in attendance.


Focus on Sustainable Development and Economic Reform

Both meetings highlighted Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening its international partnerships for sustainable development. The EU’s trade programs and the ADB’s financial support are pivotal in addressing current economic challenges and fostering long-term growth.

Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasized the government’s dedication to regional stability, economic reform, and transparency. These partnerships are seen as essential to achieving sustainable growth and improving public trust in governance.
