The Sri Lankan government has extended an invitation to Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, the former CEO of Dialog Axiata and a leading figure in the country’s telecom sector, to spearhead its ambitious plans for a digital economy. This move marks a significant step toward modernizing the nation's economy and embracing the opportunities provided by the digital revolution.

Sources have revealed to the Daily Mirror that while Dr. Wijayasuriya has not officially responded to the invitation, it is highly anticipated that he will accept the offer. Known for his leadership in expanding Dialog Axiata’s influence and technological advancements, his expertise is expected to bring substantial value to the government's vision for a digitally-driven economy.

At a media briefing held today (22), Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed the government’s plan to establish a dedicated Ministry of Digital Economy, which will be pivotal in overseeing and implementing the transition to a digital-based economic model. According to Herath, the government has been actively engaging with leading experts from Sri Lanka’s digital sector to take part in this initiative.

"Several experts have been invited to contribute their knowledge and expertise to shape this transformation," Minister Herath stated during the briefing. However, he refrained from revealing any specific names, assuring that the full list of contributors will be disclosed once the discussions and selection process have been finalized.

The creation of a Digital Ministry, alongside the selection of prominent industry experts like Dr. Wijayasuriya, highlights the government’s commitment to fast-track technological adoption, boost innovation, and create a competitive edge in the global digital landscape. The government's focus on digitizing various sectors, from public administration to commerce, aims to streamline operations, increase efficiency, and foster sustainable economic growth.

The initiative reflects Sri Lanka’s broader goals of positioning itself as a hub for digital innovation in South Asia, attracting investment in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The upcoming digital transition is expected to create new jobs, enhance digital literacy, and provide a platform for local startups to thrive in a globally competitive environment. The government is optimistic that this shift will lead to a more inclusive economy, providing access to resources and services for even the most remote communities in the country.

As discussions around the digital economy take shape, all eyes will be on Dr. Wijayasuriya’s decision, and the announcement of key figures who will drive this initiative forward. The establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Digital Economy will likely be a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka's economic transformation.
