A tense situation unfolded at the Batticaloa court complex yesterday morning following the arrival of an anonymous letter warning of an impending bomb attack. The letter, received by registered post and addressed to the Chief Magistrate of Batticaloa, indicated that an explosion would target the court complex on October 25 or October 28. As a result, court proceedings were temporarily suspended, and security forces immediately launched a search operation to secure the area.
Swift Response from Security Forces
Upon receiving the threat, the Chief Magistrate promptly informed the police, who mobilized a comprehensive search operation in collaboration with the Police Special Task Force (STF) and the Sri Lankan Army. Under the coordination of STF Assistant Superintendent of Police Aruna Sampath, security personnel thoroughly searched the court premises, scanning for any suspicious items or individuals.
After an exhaustive search yielded no suspicious objects or individuals, security forces assured the Chief Magistrate of the premises’ safety, allowing for court proceedings to resume later in the day.
Investigation Reveals Use of Fake Address
Preliminary investigations into the letter revealed that it had been sent using a fictitious address, adding a layer of complexity to the case. The police, under the leadership of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana, have now launched a full-scale investigation to trace the origin of the letter and identify those responsible for the scare.
Enhanced Security Measures Implemented
Following this incident, additional security protocols have been instituted at the Batticaloa court complex. The police are coordinating closely with local authorities to ensure heightened surveillance and are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any unusual activities.
Community Concerns and Law Enforcement Efforts
The incident has sparked concern among the residents of Batticaloa, who frequent the court complex for various legal matters. As investigations continue, law enforcement officials are reassuring the community that every effort is being made to maintain safety and prevent disruptions to essential judicial functions.
This incident underscores the importance of continued vigilance and swift law enforcement responses to threats, ensuring that public safety remains paramount in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.
