Mr. Patali Champika Ranawaka, the leader of the United Republic Peramuna, expressed support for the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)'s decision to field a candidate independently in the upcoming presidential election. He emphasized that voters should democratically assess this candidate, taking into account the broader context.

Ranawaka questioned whether SLPP members still support the Rajapaksa family, who he claims were responsible for the country's economic downfall, as determined by the Supreme Court. While he does not have significant issues with individual SLPP members, he opposes the leadership associated with Mahinda, Gotabaya, and Basil Rajapaksa.

He made these remarks during a media briefing following a public meeting organized by United Republic Front member Mr. Dilshan Muthukumarana in Pannipitiya, attended by party leaders including President Dr. Ajith Amarasinghe, Vice Presidents Major General (Retired) Tilak Ubhayawardena, and Teekshana Gammanpila.

In response to journalists' questions, Ranawaka clarified that his party has not yet decided on supporting Ranil Wickramasinghe but is open to discussions. He mentioned concerns about some of Wickramasinghe's past actions but highlighted the importance of working together on solutions to address the nation's economic challenges. He noted that their primary focus is on the country's economic recovery and that any decision would be based on a consensus within their political alliance, prioritizing national interests over personal ambitions.

Ranawaka also mentioned that a decision on his candidacy would be made soon, based on internal party discussions and consultations with their allies. He emphasized that their approach to the presidential election is to find a candidate who can lead the country through its current economic difficulties.
